TOP STORY: City move ahead of Liverpool in Guimarães chase

Manchester City are leading the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães, according to AS.

After previously meeting with the 26-year-old’s representatives in January, the Citizens are expected to return to their search for a midfielder this summer, and Guimarães remains one of the names high up on their wishlist.

A release clause in his contract allows him to be signed for a fee of €115 million, but it is reported that the Magpies could be willing to negotiate to as low as €80m, with the club required to offload players to help remain aligned with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Liverpool are also said to have Guimarães on their radar as the Reds continue the search for a marquee midfield signing of their own, but the latest indicates that Man City have the advantage.

PAPER GOSSIP

– Bayern Munich are interested in Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, reports the Independent. The club are reported to be preparing an overhaul of their squad this summer under new boss Vincent Kompany, and believe that the 20-year-old could «provide the solution» to their midfield problems. Wharton was a standout player for the Eagles in the Premier League after arriving from Blackburn Rovers in January, and recently earned a call-up to the England’s European Championship preliminary squad.

– An offer between £60m and £70m will be required to land Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, according to the Guardian. The 21-year-old has been linked with Manchester United recently, but the latest indicates that the Toffees will stand firm with their valuation. He made 41 appearances across all competitions for manager Sean Dyche this season.

– Talks over a new contract have been opened by Everton with striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, reports Team Talk. Newcastle are believed to be one of the sides keen on the 27-year-old, but the Toffees are hopeful that a new extension at Goodison Park will persuade him to stay at the club. After a spate of injury issues, Calvert-Lewin found form towards the end of the Premier League season with four goals and an assist in the final seven games.

– Former Newcastle Jets striker Archie Goodwin looks set to join Adelaide United, according to 10 News. The 19-year-old is expected to be «the first of many new recruits» with the Reds looking to rebuild under the guidance of PSV Eindhoven legend and former Netherlands international Ernest Faber, their new technical director.

– Juventus have no plans to part ways with centre-back Bremer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. The 27-year-old has recently been linked with Manchester United but it is reported that the Bianconeri are planning to make the Brazil international a «cornerstone» of their future project. While he has a release clause in his current contract for a fee in the region of £70m, it isn’t set to become active until the summer of 2025.

– A deal could be difficult for Liverpool to complete for Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, reports the Daily Mail. The Reds’ new manager Arne Slot is reported to be interested in a move for the 21-year-old, but the Stamford Bridge hierarchy have no plans to part ways with him this summer. Colwill remains contracted at the club until the summer of 2029.
